End crystals can only be placed on obsidian or bedrock. Once placed, the crystal floats and rotates — and if anything damages it, it explodes. You cannot mine or pick a placed crystal back up.

Each respawned dragon drops less experience than the first kill, but the fight re-opens the gateway portals — which makes respawning the cheapest way to reach more end cities when your outer-End gateways are used up.

An end crystal explosion is one of the strongest blasts in the game — noticeably stronger than TNT. Because you can place and detonate a crystal instantly with a hit, 'crystal PvP' grew into its own combat style: place on obsidian, punch, and the explosion does the work.
The same trick demolishes bases and the Ender Dragon fight can turn deadly when a crystal you shoot on a tower detonates next to you. Treat every placed crystal like a primed explosive, not a decoration.
