How to Get Torch
Torches are crafted from one coal or charcoal placed above one stick, yielding four torches per craft. Each torch emits light level 14—one short of maximum—and in current versions hostile mobs spawn only at block light level 0, so a well-lit area is fully spawn-proofed. Torches also generate naturally in mineshafts, villages, strongholds, and several other structures.
- Get coal by mining coal ore with any pickaxe, or smelt logs into charcoal in a furnace.
- Place one coal or charcoal directly above one stick in any crafting grid to make four torches.
- Place torches on top of or on the sides of solid blocks as you explore—space them so light never drops to zero in areas you want mob-free.
What Is Torch Used For?
Coal
One coal crafts four torches; a single stack of coal becomes 256 torches.
Charcoal
A fully renewable stand-in for coal—smelt logs when coal ore is scarce.
Stick
One stick per craft; keep a stack handy on every caving run.
Lantern
A torch surrounded by iron nuggets upgrades into a lantern with light level 15 for permanent builds.
Spawn-proofing
Hostile mobs need block light level 0 to spawn, so torch-lit floors keep caves, bases, and farms safe.
