Give Absorption II for 60 seconds (Java Edition 1.13+; duration in seconds, then amplifier where 0 = level I):
Remove the effect from the nearest player:
Absorption adds temporary yellow hearts on top of your health bar, a damage buffer that soaks hits before your real hearts are touched.
Eating a golden apple grants 2 absorption hearts for two minutes, an enchanted golden apple grants a full row of 16, and a totem of undying adds Absorption after saving you. There is no absorption potion in survival.
Absorption hearts do not regenerate: once chipped away they are gone until you reapply the effect. Pop a golden apple before entering a fight rather than mid-retreat, so the buffer works from full strength.
The effect ID for Absorption is minecraft:absorption. Java Edition 1.13+ /effect commands use this namespaced form. On Java 1.12.2 and earlier the numerical ID was 22.
Run /effect give @p minecraft:absorption 60 1 to get Absorption II for 60 seconds. The first number is the duration in seconds; the second is the amplifier (0 = level I, 1 = level II). Remove it with /effect clear @p minecraft:absorption.

No. Absorption hearts are a one-time buffer: damage removes them permanently until you apply the effect again. Regeneration only heals your regular red hearts.
