What Channeling Does
During a thunderstorm, a thrown trident strike calls real lightning down onto the target — setting fires, charging creepers, and converting mobs.
Tip: Channeling is the mob-head farmer: lightning-charged creepers make other mobs drop their heads. It cannot share a trident with Riptide.
Using Channeling Well
Channeling only works while a thunderstorm is active and the target can see the sky — indoors or in clear weather it does nothing. Its real jobs are conversion mechanics: lightning charges creepers, turns villagers into witches, pigs into zombie piglins, and mooshrooms into their brown variant. For pure throwing damage it adds nothing. It conflicts with Riptide, so pick one identity per trident.
Both are trident exclusives and mutually exclusive: Riptide is mobility in any rain or water, Channeling is lightning utility but only in thunderstorms. Most players keep Channeling on a second trident for mob-head sessions.
Loyalty makes the trident come back; Channeling adds lightning. They stack — Loyalty III + Channeling is the standard storm trident.
Channeling Version History
Java Edition 1.13 (Update Aquatic, July 2018): Added alongside the trident itself.
Bedrock Edition: Channeling works the same in Bedrock Edition, requiring a thunderstorm and a clear view of the sky.
Channeling FAQ
What is the enchantment ID for Channeling?
The enchantment ID for Channeling is minecraft:channeling. Java Edition 1.13+ commands such as /enchant use this namespaced form.
What is the max level of Channeling?
Channeling goes up to level I (level 1). Run /enchant @p minecraft:channeling 1 while holding a valid item to apply the maximum level.
Why isn't my Channeling trident summoning lightning?
It only works during an active thunderstorm, and the target must be under the open sky. Normal rain is not enough — it must be thunder weather.
What is Channeling used for?
Mainly mob conversions: charging creepers (for mob head farming), turning villagers into witches, pigs into zombified piglins, and red mooshrooms into brown ones.
Can you have Channeling and Riptide?
No, they are mutually exclusive. Channeling pairs with Loyalty instead.
