What Lure Does

Reduces the wait time for a bite while fishing by about 5 seconds per level. It changes only how fast you catch, not what you catch.

Effect per Level

  • I: ~5 seconds shorter wait
  • II: ~10 seconds shorter wait
  • III: ~15 seconds shorter wait

Tip: Lure III plus an open-sky rain bonus makes bites come every few seconds. Fishing in rain is genuinely faster — use it.

Using Lure Well

Lure is the fishing speed enchantment: less waiting per cast means more catches per hour, whatever you are fishing for. It has zero effect on loot quality — that is Luck of the Sea's job — so the two are the natural pair on any serious fishing rod. Note the wait time also drops naturally when fishing in rain with the bobber in open water.

How to Get Lure

Enchanting table (fishing rod), Librarian villager trades, structure chest loot, and fishing treasure.

Best Combinations

/enchant Command for Lure

Hold a valid item in your main hand, then run (Java Edition 1.13+; the level is optional and defaults to 1):

/enchant @p minecraft:lure 3

This example applies the maximum level III. An anvil combines two matching levels only up to this maximum — higher levels exist only through commands.

Or give yourself a Fishing Rod with Lure III already applied (Java 1.20.5+ component format):

/give @p minecraft:fishing_rod[minecraft:enchantments={lure:3}] 1

Items That Can Have Lure

Lure applies to fishing rods. Items from the reviewed catalog in this group:

Lure vs Other Enchantments

Lure vs Luck of the Sea

Lure is speed, Luck of the Sea is quality. If you fish for food or XP, Lure alone serves you well. If you fish for treasure — Mending books, saddles, name tags — you want both at III.

Lure Version History

  • Java Edition 1.7.2 (The Update that Changed the World, 2013): Added when fishing loot tables were introduced.

Bedrock Edition: Lure works the same in Bedrock Edition, shortening the bite wait by the same amount per level.

Lure FAQ

Does rain affect fishing speed?

Yes — fishing in rain shortens the wait time on its own, stacking with Lure. A Lure III rod in the rain catches noticeably faster than either alone.

Is Lure or Luck of the Sea better?

Different jobs: Lure catches faster, Luck of the Sea catches better. For treasure hunting run both; for a simple food farm Lure is enough.
