What Wind Burst Does

Landing a mace smash attack triggers a burst of wind that launches you back into the air, so one successful smash can chain straight into the next without touching the ground.

Effect per Level

  • I: Launches you a few blocks up — enough to chain a second smash attack
  • II: Higher launch, making chained smashes more reliable
  • III: Highest launch — the standard level for mace combat and PvP chains

Tip: Wind Burst III is essential for mace combat — it bounces you back up after each smash for continuous attacks.

Using Wind Burst Well

A smash attack only triggers when you fall more than 1.5 blocks before the hit lands, and a landed smash negates your fall damage — so Wind Burst turns every successful hit into the setup for the next one. Open areas are ideal, because the higher the launch, the more fall distance you bank for the following smash. Watch your positioning under low ceilings and next to walls: a mistimed burst wastes the launch, and a missed smash means you take the fall damage yourself.

How to Get Wind Burst

Ominous vaults in trial chambers only. Defeat an ominous trial spawner (active while you have Bad Omen or Trial Omen) to earn an ominous trial key, then use it on an ominous vault. Wind Burst never appears on the enchanting table, in Librarian trades, or from fishing.

Drop chance: 5.5% per ominous vault opened with an ominous trial key (Java Edition). On average you will open around 18 ominous vaults before finding a Wind Burst book, so bring several keys per trial chamber run.

Best Combinations

/enchant Command for Wind Burst

Hold a valid item in your main hand, then run (Java Edition 1.13+; the level is optional and defaults to 1):

/enchant @p minecraft:wind_burst 3

This example applies the maximum level III. An anvil combines two matching levels only up to this maximum — higher levels exist only through commands.

Or give yourself a Mace with Wind Burst III already applied (Java 1.20.5+ component format):

/give @p minecraft:mace[minecraft:enchantments={wind_burst:3}] 1

Wind Burst vs Other Enchantments

Wind Burst vs Density

Density adds raw smash-attack damage for every block you fall, while Wind Burst adds mobility by launching you back up after each smash. They are not rivals — they stack on the same mace, and the standard endgame build runs Density V + Wind Burst III. If you can only start with one, Density wins damage races on flat ground; Wind Burst wins once you have room to stay airborne.

Wind Burst vs Breach

Breach reduces how much of your smash damage the target's armor blocks, making it the PvP pick against netherite-geared players. Wind Burst does no bonus damage at all — it is purely about chaining smashes. Breach and Density are mutually exclusive, but Wind Burst is compatible with either, so a mace can run Breach IV + Wind Burst III for armored fights.

Wind Burst Version History

  • Java Edition 1.21 (Tricky Trials): Added Wind Burst alongside the mace, trial chambers, and the other mace enchantments Density and Breach.

Bedrock Edition: Wind Burst is also available in Bedrock Edition 1.21.0 and later, with the same maximum level of III and the same ominous-vault source as Java Edition.

Wind Burst FAQ

What is the enchantment ID for Wind Burst?

The enchantment ID for Wind Burst is minecraft:wind_burst. Java Edition 1.13+ commands such as /enchant use this namespaced form.

What is the max level of Wind Burst?

Wind Burst goes up to level III (level 3). Run /enchant @p minecraft:wind_burst 3 while holding a valid item to apply the maximum level.

Can you get Wind Burst from an enchanting table?

No. Wind Burst never appears on the enchanting table, and Librarian villagers do not trade it. The only source is ominous vaults in trial chambers, which require an ominous trial key from an ominous trial spawner.

What is the drop chance of Wind Burst?

Wind Burst has a 5.5% chance to be ejected from an ominous vault each time you open one with an ominous trial key (Java Edition). That averages out to roughly 1 book per 18 vaults, though luck varies per run.

Is Wind Burst available in Bedrock Edition?

Yes. Wind Burst exists in Bedrock Edition 1.21.0 and later with the same rules as Java Edition: mace only, max level III, ominous vaults only.

Does Wind Burst conflict with Density or Breach?

No. Density and Breach are mutually exclusive with each other, but Wind Burst is not part of that damage group. You can run Density V + Wind Burst III or Breach IV + Wind Burst III on the same mace.

What items can have Wind Burst?

Only the mace. Wind Burst cannot be applied to swords, axes, tridents, or any other weapon.

How do you chain smash attacks with Wind Burst?

Fall more than 1.5 blocks before your hit lands so the game counts it as a smash attack. Wind Burst then launches you upward, so your next hit also falls far enough to count as another smash. At level III the launch is high enough to keep the chain going in open areas.
