What Fortune Does

Increases drops from mined blocks: ores drop more items, with an average of about 1.33×, 1.75×, and 2.2× drops at levels I, II, and III. Also improves crop and gravel/flint rates.

Effect per Level

  • I: ~1.33× average ore drops
  • II: ~1.75× average
  • III: ~2.2× average (up to 4× per ore)

Tip: Fortune III on diamonds is the single best return on any enchantment — a diamond vein yields roughly double. It cannot share a tool with Silk Touch.

Using Fortune Well

Fortune works on anything that drops items rather than itself: coal, diamond, emerald, lapis, redstone, quartz, amethyst, copper and iron/gold raw ores... plus glowstone, melons, and crops like wheat and carrots. It does nothing for stone, wood, or obsidian. Keep it off your Silk Touch tool — the two are mutually exclusive by design.

How to Get Fortune

Enchanting table, Librarian villager trades, structure chest loot, and fishing treasure.

Best Combinations

/enchant Command for Fortune

Hold a valid item in your main hand, then run (Java Edition 1.13+; the level is optional and defaults to 1):

/enchant @p minecraft:fortune 3

This example applies the maximum level III. An anvil combines two matching levels only up to this maximum — higher levels exist only through commands.

Fortune vs Other Enchantments

Fortune vs Silk Touch

Fortune multiplies drops; Silk Touch keeps the block. Diamond ore: Fortune. Ender chests, glass, bee nests, and ore blocks for decoration: Silk Touch. Mutually exclusive, so the answer is two pickaxes.

Fortune vs Efficiency

Efficiency speeds up every swing; Fortune adds nothing unless the block drops items. For pure mining speed take Efficiency — for ore yield take Fortune. A serious mining pick runs both.

Fortune Version History

  • Java Edition Beta 1.9 (2011): Added with the original enchanting system.

Bedrock Edition: Fortune works the same in Bedrock Edition, including the ~2.2× average at level III.

Fortune FAQ

What is the enchantment ID for Fortune?

The enchantment ID for Fortune is minecraft:fortune. Java Edition 1.13+ commands such as /enchant use this namespaced form. On Java 1.12.2 and earlier the numerical ID was 35.

What is the max level of Fortune?

Fortune goes up to level III (level 3). Run /enchant @p minecraft:fortune 3 while holding a valid item to apply the maximum level.

Does Fortune work on iron and gold ore?

Yes — since ores drop raw items, Fortune multiplies raw iron, raw gold, and raw copper drops. It also works on coal, diamond, emerald, lapis, redstone, quartz, and amethyst.

Can you combine Fortune and Silk Touch?

No, they are mutually exclusive. Fortune gives you more drops; Silk Touch gives you the block itself. Most players carry one pickaxe of each.

Does Fortune work on crops?

Yes. Fortune increases wheat seed, carrot, potato, and beetroot drops, and improves flint rates from gravel. It does not increase the wheat itself, only the seeds.

Is Fortune III worth it?

Absolutely — it averages 2.2× drops from ores, which roughly doubles a diamond vein. It is one of the highest-value enchantments in the game.
