About Obsidian in Minecraft
Obsidian is a dark, durable block formed when water flows over lava. It is required for Nether Portals and has high blast resistance.

How to Get Obsidian
Obsidian forms when water flows over a lava source block. Mine it with a diamond or netherite pickaxe; weaker pickaxes do not yield the block.
- Locate lava source blocks or create obsidian by placing water over lava.
- Use a diamond or netherite pickaxe.
- Collect the block for portals, enchanting, or blast-resistant builds.

Light the interior of an obsidian Nether portal frame.
