What Feather Falling Does

Reduces fall damage by 12% per level, up to 48% at level IV. Boots only.

Effect per Level

  • I: -12% fall damage
  • II: -24%
  • III: -36%
  • IV: -48% fall damage

Tip: Feather Falling IV stacks with Protection IV's fall reduction. It is the difference between surviving an elytra landing and not.

Using Feather Falling Well

Feather Falling is the default boot enchantment because fall damage is the most common accidental death — caving, scaffolding, elytra practice. It stacks with the fall reduction from Protection on other pieces. It does nothing against the void, and it will not save you from a truly extreme drop, but everyday 10-block falls stop mattering.

How to Get Feather Falling

Enchanting table (boots), Librarian villager trades, structure chest loot, and fishing treasure.

Best Combinations

/enchant Command for Feather Falling

Hold a valid item in your main hand, then run (Java Edition 1.13+; the level is optional and defaults to 1):

/enchant @p minecraft:feather_falling 4

This example applies the maximum level IV. An anvil combines two matching levels only up to this maximum — higher levels exist only through commands.

Items That Can Have Feather Falling

Feather Falling applies to boots. Items from the reviewed catalog in this group:

Protection IV also reduces fall damage (among everything else), and it stacks with Feather Falling. FF IV is the stronger fall-specific reduction and it is boots-only — run both for maximum fall safety.

Feather Falling Version History

  • Java Edition Beta 1.9 (2011): Added with the original enchanting system.

Bedrock Edition: Feather Falling works the same in Bedrock Edition: 12% less fall damage per level, boots only.

Feather Falling FAQ

What is the enchantment ID for Feather Falling?

The enchantment ID for Feather Falling is minecraft:feather_falling. Java Edition 1.13+ commands such as /enchant use this namespaced form. On Java 1.12.2 and earlier the numerical ID was 2.

What is the max level of Feather Falling?

Feather Falling goes up to level IV (level 4). Run /enchant @p minecraft:feather_falling 4 while holding a valid item to apply the maximum level.

How much does Feather Falling IV reduce?

48% of fall damage by itself. Combined with Protection IV on the other armor pieces, falls that would kill you become survivable.

Does Feather Falling work with elytra?

Yes — crash-landing with an elytra counts as fall damage, so Feather Falling IV noticeably reduces elytra landing deaths.

Does Feather Falling protect against the void?

No. Void damage ignores all armor and enchantments.

Is Feather Falling better than Protection on boots?

They stack, so you do not have to choose: boots can carry both Feather Falling IV and Protection IV, plus Unbreaking and Mending.
