What Soul Speed Does

Greatly increases movement speed on soul sand and soul soil, at the cost of slowly draining boot durability while you run on them.

Effect per Level

• I: noticeably faster on soul blocks
• II: faster still
• III: faster than normal walking, even on slowing soul sand

Tip: Soul Speed III on soul soil (which never slows you) is the nether highway trick — faster than sprinting on land. Bring Unbreaking, because it eats boot durability.

Using Soul Speed Well

Soul sand normally drags you to half speed; Soul Speed cancels that and then some. On soul soil — which has no slowdown of its own — the bonus is pure speed, which is why nether tunnels get paved with it. Two catches: it only works on those two blocks, and running on them drains durability, so pair it with Unbreaking III and Mending.

How to Get Soul Speed

Treasure enchantment — never on the enchanting table and not traded by villagers. Find the book in bastion remnant chests or get it by bartering with piglins.

Soul Speed vs Depth Strider

Both are boot mobility enchantments for specific terrain: Depth Strider for water, Soul Speed for soul sand and soul soil in the nether. Different blocks, different dimensions — they stack on the same boots.

Soul Speed vs Swift Sneak

Swift Sneak speeds up sneaking on leggings; Soul Speed speeds up soul-block running on boots. No overlap, no conflict.

• Java Edition 1.16 (Nether Update, June 2020): Added with the soul sand valley and piglin bartering.

Bedrock Edition: Soul Speed works the same in Bedrock Edition and is likewise found through bastions and piglin bartering.
