What Fire Protection Does

Reduces fire and lava damage by 8% per level per armor piece — up to 32% per piece at level IV — and shortens how long you burn by 15% per level.

Effect per Level

  • I: 8% less fire damage per piece, -15% burn time
  • II: 16% per piece, -30% burn time
  • III: 24% per piece, -45% burn time
  • IV: 32% per piece, -60% burn time

Tip: Fire Protection is the nether set: lava surprises, blaze fireballs, and magma cubes all count. With Fire Resistance potions it approaches full lava immunity.

Using Fire Protection Well

Fire Protection is the strongest specialized protection in practice, because fire and lava are the hazards that bypass armor in both dimensions. The burn-time reduction means you stop being on fire sooner after escaping lava. Like the other specialists, it conflicts with plain Protection per piece — so many players build one Fire Protection set for nether trips and keep Protection for everything else.

How to Get Fire Protection

Enchanting table, Librarian villager trades, structure chest loot, and fishing treasure.

Best Combinations

/enchant Command for Fire Protection

Hold a valid item in your main hand, then run (Java Edition 1.13+; the level is optional and defaults to 1):

/enchant @p minecraft:fire_protection 4

This example applies the maximum level IV. An anvil combines two matching levels only up to this maximum — higher levels exist only through commands.

Fire Protection vs Other Enchantments

Fire Protection vs Protection

Fire Protection gives 8% per level per piece against fire and lava plus shorter burn time; Protection gives 4% against almost everything. Nether-focused kit: Fire Protection. Daily armor: Protection.

Fire Protection vs Blast Protection

Same specialized 8% formula for different hazards. Fire and lava are common in both dimensions, explosions are situational — Fire Protection is usually the more useful specialist.

Fire Protection Version History

  • Java Edition Beta 1.9 (2011): Added with the original enchanting system.

Bedrock Edition: Fire Protection works the same in Bedrock Edition, including the 15%-per-level burn time reduction.

Fire Protection FAQ

What is the enchantment ID for Fire Protection?

The enchantment ID for Fire Protection is minecraft:fire_protection. Java Edition 1.13+ commands such as /enchant use this namespaced form. On Java 1.12.2 and earlier the numerical ID was 1.

What is the max level of Fire Protection?

Fire Protection goes up to level IV (level 4). Run /enchant @p minecraft:fire_protection 4 while holding a valid item to apply the maximum level.

Does Fire Protection make you immune to lava?

No. It reduces lava and fire damage and shortens burn time, but you still take damage. True immunity needs a Fire Resistance potion.

Is Fire Protection or Protection better for the nether?

Fire Protection — lava and blaze fire are the nether's main threats, and the specialized reduction is double Protection's rate. Bring both sets if you can.

Can Fire Protection stack with Protection?

Not on the same piece — the four protection types are mutually exclusive per armor item.
